The personal licence is granted to an individual by their local licensing authority/council. The personal licence allows the holder to sell or authorise (other people) the sale of alcohol. However the personal licence on it’s own is not enough, as there also needs to be a premises licence.

Applications for a personal licence are made to the local authority / council for where the applicant lives. If you are making a premises licence application or any changes to your premises licence, the relevant authority in that instance will be for the location that your premises is located

A personal licence does not have an expiry date and now lasts indefinitely. The good news is that you can ignore this expiry date and you don’t need to renew it. That said, authorities will issue you a new one without an expiry date for a fee of £10.50.

A premises licence is granted by the licensing authority (council) that the premises is situated within. The licence permits one or more of the licensable activities to take place on the premises. There are 4 licensable activities

The application for a premises licence is made to the licensing authority in which the premises is situated and the application itself consists of: Application form, signed consent form for the designated premises supervisor (if the application includes the sale of alcohol), plan of the premises in a specific format and the application fee.
